Q+A with Cathy Pope

For our latest Q+A chat, we caught up with Cathy Pope, founder and talented designer of Cathy Pope Jewellery.
What do you love most about your job?
I love being in charge of my own time and having the space to make Cathy Pope Jewellery whatever I want it to be. As a designer I can be as creative as I like with my jewellery as well as the marketing, advertising and creation of my brand. I find these aspects of my job really satisfying.
How do you look after yourself mentally and physically?
I think most small business owners would agree that you tend to put everyone and everything else first and our own well-being last. I’ve burnt myself out over the past few years so I recently had a real wake up call and had to make my health more of a priority. I’ve addressed the types of food I fuel myself with as well as slowing down, going to yoga and mediation and simply putting myself higher on the to-do list. It’s still a struggle but I’m feeling so much better now.
How do you like to start your day and what are your daily rituals?
I start my day with a good skincare ritual which always includes a good hydrator as it provides a good base for makeup, then makeup, hair, fresh green juice, dog walk then coffee.
What does true beauty mean to you?
True beauty to me is energy exuded from the inside. Anyone who is calm, smiles and is at peace with themselves is instantly beautiful in my eyes. As I get older beauty takes on so much more meaning and dimension.
If we took a peek inside your handbag right now, what would we find?
If I was honest you’d find mints that have fallen out of a container, a ridiculous amount of lipsticks and glosses, my pocket size Curio Noir parfum and business cards – not very exciting really.
What’s your one must have beauty product and why?
I’ve been using Ultraceuticals B2 Hydrating Serum for about 6 weeks and I’ve noticed a huge difference in fine lines and moisture levels on my face. It’s made a huge difference.
What’s the most effective treatment for your skin that you’ve experienced so far?
I always enjoy the luxury of treating myself at Haven every few months, and I really notice a difference in my skin after a microdermabrasion treatment combined with a facial.
Now that I am in my 40's, I'm really starting to notice the effects of ageing on my skin so I value the expertise the Haven skin therapists have - they always find me the most effective treatments and I’m always thrilled with the results. My skin became unusually dry recently so the Osmosis Medi Facial was recommended and customised to re-hydrate and nourish my skin. It was wonderful and I kept feeling the effects over the following week which was great.
What’s your most treasured possession?
My Dads onyx signet ring that I was given after he passed away. He’d bought it in London in the 60s on his OE and wore it every day. I framed my Six Reasons collection around this central piece and designed my own interpretation of his ring. Pleasingly, it’s one of my biggest sellers and it’s also made better that our Prime Minister wears it too!
What’s your favorite thing to do in your home town?
I find I’m so short on downtime these days running my business but my husband and I love taking our dog out to Kakamatua Beach or just even our local park and watching him run free with other dogs. It’s a rare treat for a big city dog.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
A problem shared is a problem halved.
