Is Dermaplaning Right for Me?

Posted by Haven Skin Spa on 26 April 2018

Dermaplaning is the newest facial treatment on offer at Haven Skin Spa and is quickly becoming one of our most popular. If you have been wanting to know more about it and wondered why it has become so many people's go-to treatment, keep reading...

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a physical form of exfoliation similar, in theory, to microdermabrasion.  A sterile, surgical scalpel, (not as scary as it sounds), is used in a gentle gliding action over the skin’s surface removing the very outer layer of dead skin along with any fine vellus hair – that pesky peach fuzz.

What are the benefits of Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a form of exfoliation which means it will remove the buildup of dead skin and microscopic hairs that can make your complexion appear dull, uneven, flaky or congested.

"Dermaplaning cleverly triggers the cell regeneration process. It helps to improve the appearance of things like acne scarring and hyperpigmentation, and the effects of the procedure are instant in leaving your skin with a smooth appearance and a radiant glow. Along with the removal of fine hairs, it results in healthier skin that feels silkier”, explains Dr Jonquille Chantrey, cosmetic surgeon and skin expert.

The extra benefit that Dermaplaning offers over other types of exfoliation treatments is that it actually removes vellus hair, often called "peach fuzz", from the face.  When a person has hair and peach fuzz on their face, this can lead to an accumulation of bacteria, which in turn, can lead to breakouts, blackheads and clogged pores.

Will hair grow back thicker or faster?

The short answer is no.  There is no medical or scientific evidence to support the urban myth that hair grows back faster or thicker as the result of dermaplaning.  While the hair will grow back, it's appearance and thickness will be the same as it was before the treatment because Dermaplaning does not interrupt the hair follicle in any way.

Who is a good candidate for Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is suitable for most skins types and is particularly good for those who are not able to tolerate other exfoliating treatments, such as facial peels or microdermabrasions.  While chemical peels are effective skin rejuvenation treatments for many people, if your skin is simply too sensitive then Dermaplaning is a safe and effective alternative.

How Does Dermaplaning Rejuvenate Your Skin?

Dermaplaning rejuvenates your skin in the same way that a lot of other exfoliation treatments do. When the top layers of the skin are removed, your skin looks rejuvenated because the healthy skin underneath those dead skin cells is revealed.

The benefits don’t stop there. Your skin is kind of kicked into overdrive, which means that many more healthy cells are produced. In the weeks that follow your treatment, your skin will be producing more collagen and elastin. These things are extremely beneficial for your skin and help your skin look youthful and fresh.

Dermaplaning is recommended once per month to maintain healthy-looking and smooth skin.  It is important that this treatment is performed by a trained professional.

Dermaplaning treatments are available at our Mt Eden and Takapuna clinics.  Please feel free to get in touch if you would like to know more.
